Today is the first day of the Labor Day Weekend and we all know what that means. Labor Day Weekend is the official end of summer. Yes, for all you legalistic types, Sunday, September 22 is the Autumnal Equinox which, means we move from summer to fall in scientific terms. But what every school kid or working person knows...summer is over. Kids now march to the clanging of the school bell. They are getting up in the morning, brushing their teeth and hair and arriving at school with regularity. Homework, not baseball, swimming or s'mores by the fire pit is the most pressing event in their life.  For the working person, every project that languished in the summer heat on your bosses desk now appears on your desk with the word urgent, triple underlined scrawled on a yellow post-it note.  Yes, summer is over.

Temperature may once again rise to the 80s or even the 90s but the weekends will now be for school shopping or cleaning out the garage. You are school shopping again because your kids pleadingly explained that nobody is wearing THIS and that YOU purchased ALL THE WRONG clothes. In New York City, families return from summering in the Hamptons, the Vineyard and Coney Island to play musical chairs for parking spaces. The leisurely pace around the reservoir in Central Park turns into a race to lose that last five pounds before the days grow shorter.

Summer is over but wait, the good news is that fall is coming. I love fall. The colors, the sweaters, the warm teas and apple picking all come with the change of season. After a day of apple picking, I head home to make my classic apple pie. This pie makes the house smell warm and yummy when it is baking and tastes so good with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I will share that recipe on Foodie Friday. Foodie Friday will now be the 4th Friday of the month. Summer maybe over but fall is beginning. Until then, shut down your computer and go outside to play. Enjoy the last few days of summer.
